Choose Your Own Adventure Book

I loved reading Choose Your Own Adventure stories when I was in elementary and middle school. After reading one or more pages, the reader is prompted to choose what should happen next and is told what page to turn to so they can follow that plot line. I would reread several times to see all the possible ways the story could go. I introduced these types of stories to my fifth graders this year. There are other series of interactive books about different nonfiction and fiction topics such as the Oregon Trail and Nintendo games.

Fifth graders have collaboratively learned many digital skills this year as they created their own Choose Your Own Adventure stories in Google Slides. They spent a couple hours brainstorming characters, setting, and problems and writing the summary of their idea. Then they learned to link slides to make different story lines as they wrote the plot in their slide show. We talked about copyrighted material and how to choose images with Creative Commons licenses to use in projects. We have been practicing photo formatting techniques while keeping text readability in mind. Below are links to interactive stories that a few groups of fifth graders created.

There are many online resources available if you would like a similar project yourself or with students. You can also use Google Forms as an alternative to making a slideshow.
